INDIANAPOLIS – A U.S. court in Indiana has blocked the state’s age verification law from taking effect next Monday, July 1.
Free Speech Coalition (FSC), which along with other industry stakeholders challenged the law in court, has released a report rack praising the decision:
The Free Speech Coalition fully agrees with the decision from the district court in Indiana that prevents that state’s age verification law from going into effect on Monday, July 1.
Judge Richard L. Young entered his decision today, granting FSC and our co-plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction on the grounds that SB17 is “probably prima facie unconstitutional under the First Amendment.” The order effectively prevents the law from taking effect prevent the Indiana Attorney General to take no action to enforce this.
As FSC has repeatedly stated, we can and must work to prevent minors from accessing age-inappropriate material. There are less burdensome solutions that do not violate the rights of legal adults to access the Internet without being monitored or compromising their anonymity.
